Hometown Cha Cha Cha Is a Cute Show, but the Outfits Sure Weren’t.

For a dentist who I presume earns 10k+ a month, with a high-fashion obsessed brain who likes all things pretty, you’d think dentist Yoon Hye Jin would have a closet full of fashionable outfits, but you'd be wrong. I mean this in the nicest way, but some of her outfits are absolutely deplorable. So, in the spirit of making sure rich people actually dress properly, and don’t just buy and wear things because of the brands, here are some of her outfits no one should ever wear. Especially if you have money. Get a personal stylist if you must.

#1: Not-So-Grape Outfit

Excuse the pun, but in this scene, she’s supposed to be attending a wedding, and this is definitely not a wedding reception outfit. In my opinion, the least you could wear for a wedding reception is a dress, if not a jumpsuit or a really nice, tailored suit. Hye Jin wants her dentist friends and acquaintances to be impressed by her at the reception, but she looks like she is the reception service employee at the hotel the wedding is hosted at. This outfit will not impress anyone, even on a random Tuesday afternoon, so God knows why she thinks this outfit will make her seem the least pathetic. And this outfit was approved by her friend too? The friend wanted her to fail.

(This isn’t a face of a friend but a foe.)

#2: It’s Not Christmas

This outfit made me gasp…in horror. This dress should not be worn anywhere. Not to your boyfriend’s birthday party, not to a shopping mall, not to an opera concert, maybe for a Christmas party if you must, but nowhere else should this be worn. I don’t care if this is Gucci; I don’t care it costs 2,500 euros (this is the real crime). I don’t care how pretty you are, no one can pull this off. This dress should’ve never made it off the designer’s sketchbook.

#3: Not-So-Stylish Pyjamas

She came across the term “athleisure” one day but only took “leisure” into mind. This outfit looks exactly like what I’ve seen some 50-year-old aunties wear to work, and it’s not a good thing. Not sure if the stylist just didn’t iron the pants properly, but this entire look is a drag. Besides the dreadful colours, she also looks like a shapeless blob. Why couldn’t she have at least tucked it in and paired it with a belt? Or change the pants to a tighter fitting one?

#4: Let’s Break Up

All I have to say is, if you ever catch me wearing this on a date, call the police. I’ve been kidnapped, and my badly dressed clone is out to ruin my reputation. I’m not claiming to be this great fashionista or anything, but this outfit is just terrible. I have no idea why most of her outfits are loose-fitting in the show. It makes her look unkempt. Her shirt is messily tucked in, and her collar is revealing her inner shirt, though I’m not sure if that was her intention. It looks like she got ready for the date in under 30 minutes, in which case I would suggest wearing a dress instead. You can never go wrong with a dress on a date, and the upside is you never have to find something else to match. Speaking of, I think I still should give credit where credit is due because she managed to find pink pants in the exact same shade as the shirt.

#5: Mud Monster

Yet another edition to the loose-fitting-shapeless-blob edition. She has no excuses for this one because this was in Seoul before she had to dress more conservatively for the town's grandmas. I know she was on the clock here, but why can’t she tuck in her shirt properly!! I don’t think the pencil skirt made her movements easier at her presumably busy clinic, she should’ve worn an A-line skirt of a different colour for comfort and style. This is not what I’m expecting from someone who’s into pretty things.

(Are you referring to yourself?)

#6: When There’s No Heat

I would just like to know why are her outfits never ironed or fitted? She looks like a kid that borrowed her mum's dress, but instead of taking it out from the closet, she fished it out from the laundry basket. The dress has an interesting fold and design to an otherwise basic dress, but from the lack of ironing, the fold just looks like a big wrinkle. Please always iron your outfits unless they’re made from polyester or other wrinkle-free materials.

#7: Maybe She’s Pregnant

I didn’t realise how many loose-fitting tops she wore in the drama, but from this list alone, I think she may have been pregnant or hiding a really big food baby. I understand her character development from someone who only cared about material things and societal standing to someone who appreciates the simplicity in life, but there are simple outfits she could’ve worn that don’t make her look like such a drab. It can be done!! How else do broke students and debt-riddled young adults stay chic in their everyday dressing? Plus, her skirt really looks like a grandma’s table cover. Just because she’s in a small town doesn’t mean she has to start stealing from her neighbours' trash to make outfits.

#8: Never Let Them Know Your Next Move

There was so much potential. There were so many possibilities. There was so much hope. And then, the camera zoomed out, and I finally fully understood my parents’ emotions when they saw my result slips. Why red? Why the stripes? They say you could never go wrong in denim, but as Justin Bieber once said, never say never.

Her Saving Grace

After all the trials and tribulations we’ve faced, she finally gave us a fashion moment. This is the only outfit in the entire show I want in my closet, and it’s the only outfit that makes me think, “Ah, she’s an elitist bitch from the top 1%”. Yoon Hye Jin always talks about class and status, but her outfits always proved otherwise. It may have taken her a long time (13 episodes), but she finally showed us an outfit that makes us believe that she is indeed an elitist bitch. Good for her.

If there’s one thing to take away from this article, when in doubt, wear dresses. But not the green one. Never should it be the green one.
